JV Dons Beat the Matadors

The JV and Freshman Football Don’s took on Miramonte Frosh / Soph Team in Orinda on Friday Night – It is a testament to the strength of the Acalanes Football program when you can physically see just how any kids are in our program… vs. seeing a list of names on a roster – The Dons suited up around 75 players for the game – our team was lined up shoulder to shoulder stretching from the 20 yard line to the other 20 yard line! It was an impressive showing compared to the 30 players on our cross town rival team – Which has to have a combined Frosh/Soph team out of necessity. Our JV team invited the Freshman team to the game because a team had to back out of a scheduled game… because their number of players had gotten to low to field a team.

The JV Dons got the ball first and Quarterback Jake Boselli marched his offense down the field mixing up the run and pass game. He hit wide receiver Calvin Kotarba in the end zone for a touchdown, 7 – 0 Acalanes. On their next offensive possession the JV Dons again marched the ball right down the field, and caped a nice drive with a very well designed misdirection play to Kortarba for his second touchdown on the day, as he ran around the end for an 18 yard rushing touchdown. Unfortunately for the Dons, the Kotarba family is moving to Tennessee… we will miss Calvin’s leadership and skill for sure next season!  He finished the game with 2 catches for 38 yards. Jack Miller has come on as a strong punishing runner this season who has proved very difficult to bring down – Jack had 6 carries for 50 yards and a big 2 point conversion. The JV Don’s have had 2 of their starters get called up to Varsity this season, and the depth of talent on this team has really shined! Mason Zirkel has come on strong as a runner and receiver! 3 rushing attempts for 87 yards and 4 catches for 62 yards – great productivity from him on both sides of the ball.

On the Dons next possession it was more of the same – run – pass,, keep the defense off balance – Jake Boselli, who went 5 of 9 on pass attempts for almost a 100 yards, hit Ace Reeder in the end zone for the third TD of the night. Henry Souza, Sully Bailey and Freshman Niko White all had great offensive showings Friday as well! Niko had a nice run towards the end of the game, showing his speed around the edge for a 5 yard touchdown! The offensive look good on Friday, still some things to iron out – but effective job – 359 total yards, 4 touchdowns – The offensive coordinator worked in 8 different running backs!

Defensively for the JV Don’s Middle Linebacker Sully Bailey lead the way – He might not had the most tackles on Friday – but his presence on the field wreaks havoc on the opposing offense! – He finished the game with 3.5 tackles and 1 of those was a huge sack on 3rd down…slamming the door shut on one of Miramonte’s only positive drives. Freshman David Roux had a super game, flying all over the place on defense – David finished with 5 tackles, he forced a fumble with a big hit, that he also recovered! – Everett Glass has a interception that he ran back for 21 yards and had 2.5 tackles – Chase Caicedo, Trevor Carrillo and Brady Morrow, three of our big Defensive Linemen, dominated the line of scrimmage for the Dons – They may not have been in on a lot of tackles, but they stuffed up the line of scrimmage so effectively there was no where for the MATs runners to go!

Last game for the JV Don’s is this coming Friday at Home vs. Alhambra – Game starts at 4:30
