Varsity Girls Soccer Takes Down Alhambra

In a highly anticipated match on Friday night against notoriously tough Alhambra, the Dons knew it was going to be a battle. Alhambra had not lost a game this season, and the Dons were hoping to give them their first loss of the season.

The first half saw very even play. Some shots on both goals, tough defense, possession-style soccer. Fun to watch. At the end of the half, the score was tied at 0-0.

Much of the same occurred at the onset of the second half. The two teams are evenly matched, playing aggressively. As the clock ticked, the tension in the air became palpable. Every possession counted as did every turnover.

With 5 minutes remaining in the game, Freshman phenom forward Tatum Zuber took matters into her own feet, so to speak. Tatum was being tested on the left-wing all night, as Alhambra’s defender was extremely talented and tough. However, Tatum was able to break free to give herself some space to take a shot from the left side at the 25-yard hash mark to place the ball into the right corner of the goal over the outstretched hands of the keeper. Truly a next level goal!!! Dons take the lead 1-0.

With time ticking away, the Dogs were desperately pushing to try to even the score. But the Dons weren’t finished. Junior Aliye Wingate crossed the ball to the right side of the field where fellow Junior Emily Keeler was waiting. With one touch, Emily sailed the ball over the keeper’s hands to seal the ‘W’ for the Dons.

The Dons were very impressive in this win to give the Dogs their first loss of the season. Outstanding play in the backline, anchored by Juniors Sami Hansen and Aliye Wingate. Outside backs Freshman Jacque Peacock and Senior Dylan Hagglund both played very well. Midfielder Seniors Ivy Souza and Beth Daughters also stood out with excellent play, controlling possession with sharp passes as well as tenacious defense.

Next up for the Dons will be a league match on Wednesday at Berean Christian at 3:30pm.

Go DONS!
